A Map of Highest-Paid Active Public Employees.

Map from Deadspin.com:  http://deadspin.com/infographic-is-your-states-highest-paid-employee-a-co-489635228

Earlier today a friend of mine sent me a link to the above map which shows the highest-paid public employees in each state.   Twenty-seven of them are football coaches, 13 are basketball coaches, one is a hockey coach (New Hampshire), the rest are either university administrators or, in the case of Nevada, a member of a medical school faculty.  From reading this map, one can see the priority we as a society place on college athletics compared to how much we pay teachers and elected officials.  For instance, according to the National Center of Education Statistics, the average annual public school teacher salary in 2010-11 was $56,069 (not sure if this number includes benefits).*  The President of the United States earns $400,000 a year, including a $50,000 expense account.+   But these salary figures are not even close to the $5,476,738 that Nick Saban received as head coach of the University of Alabama football team in 2012.^  It is important to note, however, that college coaches are paid from the revenues that their teams generate.  Still, it is something to think about as the start of 2013 college football season gets closer.  Is your state's highest-paid public employee a coach?  Any inoffensive comments on this issue are welcome.
