Alabama's Shattered BCS Trophy Auctioned for $105,000

I guess some things in life are worth more if they are damaged or broken.  Back in April 2012 the father of former Alabama player Carson Tinker accidentally destroyed the Crimson Tide's 2011 BCS National Championship Trophy.  This award, also known as the Coaches' Trophy, is an hand-made Waterford crystal sculpted in the shape of a football that weighs eight pounds and is valued at around $30,000.  However, someone thought it was worth at least three times that amount.  Last Sunday, a bidder bought the trophy's broken remains at an auction hosted by the University of Alabama Celebrity Golf Tournament for $105,000.  I am not sure what someone could do with a broken trophy, but at least Alabama netted $75,000 on that deal (minus $30,000 for a replacement).

Oxbow Wins The Preakness

Congratulations to Oxbow, the winner of the 2013 Preakness Stakes.  By winning this race, Oxbow has ruined Orb's bid to win the Triple Crown, a feat that has not been done since Affirmed back in 1978.  Orb, the Kentucky Derby winner, finished fourth.   Enjoy the rest of the weekend everybody!

Thank you to Partymanners2 for posting this video to youtube.

Just In: Big Ten Posts 2014 Football Schedule

Earlier today the Big Ten Conference released their league schedule for the 2014 season.   It will feature an eight-game format and new league divisions based on geography (East-West) rather than competitive balance (Leaders-Legends).  2014 will also mark the first year that Maryland and Rutgers will play as full members of the Big Ten.   In the eight game format (which will change to a nine-game schedule in 2016) each team will play all the other members of its division and two opponents from the opposite division.  The team schedules for the Big Ten's 2014 season can be found at the following website:    http://www.fbschedules.com/2013/05/2014-big-ten-football-schedules-announced/

A Map of Highest-Paid Active Public Employees.

Map from Deadspin.com:  http://deadspin.com/infographic-is-your-states-highest-paid-employee-a-co-489635228

Earlier today a friend of mine sent me a link to the above map which shows the highest-paid public employees in each state.   Twenty-seven of them are football coaches, 13 are basketball coaches, one is a hockey coach (New Hampshire), the rest are either university administrators or, in the case of Nevada, a member of a medical school faculty.  From reading this map, one can see the priority we as a society place on college athletics compared to how much we pay teachers and elected officials.  For instance, according to the National Center of Education Statistics, the average annual public school teacher salary in 2010-11 was $56,069 (not sure if this number includes benefits).*  The President of the United States earns $400,000 a year, including a $50,000 expense account.+   But these salary figures are not even close to the $5,476,738 that Nick Saban received as head coach of the University of Alabama football team in 2012.^  It is important to note, however, that college coaches are paid from the revenues that their teams generate.  Still, it is something to think about as the start of 2013 college football season gets closer.  Is your state's highest-paid public employee a coach?  Any inoffensive comments on this issue are welcome.

It's ORB!

Besides college football, the other major sport I follow is Horse Racing.  Right now I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb.  Will he win the Triple Crown?  Only two weeks until the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore!

SEC-ESPN TV

Today's New York Times has reported that the Southeastern Conference has signed a twenty-year agreement with ESPN to create its own television network.  Each year, the new network, which will air starting in August 2014, will feature programming that will include 45 football games, 100 men's and 60 women's basketball games, 75 baseball games, and selected events from all 21 sports that the SEC currently sponsors.  In addition, each of the conference's fourteen member schools will be able to produce and develop their own content.  Currently, both parties have not disclosed how much this agreement is worth.  However, the new contract is expected to generate more revenue for the SEC, whose existing agreement with ESPN already guarantees the league $2.25 billion over 15 years.  ESPN will own and operate the new network and it will be nationally distributed through AT&T U-Verse and other cable and satellite providers.

It remains to be seen how this new SEC-ESPN combination will affect the league's current agreement with CBS Sports.  CBS's contract with the SEC, which lasts until 2023, allows that network first choice of Saturday football games it televises at 3:30 pm Eastern.  However, as FBschedules's Kevin Kelley put it, CBS "will no longer own the 'exclusive window' for Saturday mid-afternoon games."  One other question is how the SEC will distribute revenues from its new network since it does not have a grant-of-rights agreement with its universities.  More on this story can be found at the following websites:
