UPDATED: 2014 BIG XII Conference Football Schedule

02/28/14 - Update:  Oklahoma State at Oklahoma has been moved to December 6th.  More information can be found here.

This week's news stories:

Bleacher Report has a story from the Omaha World-Herald that says ESPN is considering Lincoln, Nebraska, as a location for College Gameday on September 20th.  On that day, the Nebraska Cornhuskers will host the Miami (FL) Hurricanes.  Full story here.

Miami Hurricanes Offensive Lineman Hunter Knighton was hospitalized after passing out during a workout session.  Full story here.

Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, will host the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game until 2019.  The ACC and the Charlotte Sports Foundation announced on Monday that a six-year agreement had been signed to keep the game at that facility.  Full story here.

The NCAA is considering a rule that would slow down the "hurry-up" offensive scheme by "prohibiting teams from snapping the ball until at least ten seconds run off the forty second play clock."  According to ESPN's Brett McMurphy, only 25 of the nation's FBS-level head coaches support this proposed rule change.  Full story here.

As college football makes the transition from the BCS to the College Football Playoff, the Football Writers Association of America and the National Football Foundation recently announced the creation of a new college football poll.  It will be officially known as the "FWAA-NFF Grantland Rice Super 16."  Full story here.

The 2014 BIG XII Conference football schedule is now available on The Howell Report.  Unlike the other four FBS-level "power conferences," the ten-member Big XII no longer offers a championship game.  The last time the BIG XII had a football championship was back in 2010, the year before Nebraska and Colorado moved to different conferences.  Indeed, the conference realignment that will take place this summer will not affect the BIG XII's current membership.  As for the conference's upcoming schedule, there are plenty of games to look forward to, especially in the non-conference slate.  Some notable non-conference games include Alabama vs. West Virginia, Florida State vs. Oklahoma State, Kansas State vs. Auburn, Iowa vs. Iowa State, Oklahoma vs. Tennessee, Texas Christian vs. Minnesota, and Texas vs. UCLA.

2014 Big Ten Conference Football Schedule

This Week's News Stories:

South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier has accused Nebraska of "negative recruiting" when both schools were pursuing three-star defensive lineman Blake McClain.  Bleacher Report has the full story.

Former Northwestern Quarterback Kain Colter, who is leading an effort to unionize college football athletes, testified at a National Labor Relations Board hearing earlier today.  Full story here.

Florida State player Jameis Winston accepted the Davey O'Brien Award on Monday, an honor given to the nation's top college quarterback.  Full story here.

Oregon State hired John Garrett as its new offensive coordinator.  He replaces Danny Langsdorf, who left the Beavers to become the quarterbacks coach of the New York Giants.  Full story here.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 2014 football schedule for the Big Ten conference is now available on The Howell Report.  This summer the Big Ten will welcome Maryland and Rutgers as new members in all sports, thus increasing the number of teams in the conference from twelve to fourteen.  This new development also means that the Big Ten will reorganize and rename its football divisions.  After July 1st, "Leaders" and "Legends" will be replaced with two new divisions named "East and "West."  The East Division will consist of Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, and Rutgers.  The West Division will contain Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue, and Wisconsin.  The only protected annual inter-divisional crossover game will be the Old Oaken Bucket Rivalry between Indiana and Purdue.  Some notable non-conference games that will be on the Big Ten's schedule include Fiesta Bowl Champion Central Florida vs. Penn State, LSU vs. Wisconsin, Rose Bowl Champion Michigan State vs. Oregon, and Miami (FL) vs. Nebraska.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Over the next few weeks I will be posting the 2014 football schedules by conference as they become available.  Today's post features the 2014 football schedule for the Atlantic Coast Conference.  The ACC will have the same number of teams that it did last year (14), except it will lose Maryland to the Big Ten in July.  As a result of the upcoming conference realignment, Louisville will join the ACC as Maryland's replacement.  Also, Notre Dame's long-term association with the ACC means that the Fighting Irish will play four football games against the following teams in 2014:  Syracuse on September 27th, North Carolina on October 11th, Florida State on October 18th, and Louisville on November 22nd.  The conference championship game will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, at Bank of America Stadium on December 6th.

National Signing Day Conference and Team Rankings

National Signing Day has ended and except for a few players unable to fax their Letters of Intent because of today's snowstorm (which they will do at a later time), the 2013-2014 college football recruiting season has been completed.  According to the recruitment rankings on ESPN, Scout.com, Rivals.com, and 24/7 Sports, the Alabama Crimson Tide has once again signed the #1 class in the country.  Louisiana State signed the consensus #2 class while the rest of the top ten varied among different teams.  All four ranking services put Ohio State, Florida State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Florida, and Auburn at various places on their lists but there was some disagreement over the remaining two positions.  Here is how each ranking service appeared at the end of the day:

Scout.com:  #1 Alabama, #2 LSU, #3 Florida State, #4 Tennessee, #5 Ohio State, #6 Notre Dame, #7 Texas A&M, #8 Auburn, #9 Florida, and #10 Southern California.

24/7 Sports:  #1 Alabama, #2 LSU, #3 Ohio State, #4 Florida State, #5 Texas A&M, #6 Auburn, #7 Tennessee, #8 Georgia, #9 Florida, and #10 Notre Dame.

Rivals.com:  #1 Alabama, #2 LSU, #3 Ohio State, #4 Florida State, #5 Tennessee, #6 Texas A&M, #7 Florida, #8 Georgia, #9 Auburn, #10 Southern California.

ESPN:  #1 Alabama, #2 LSU, #3 Florida State, #4 Texas A&M, #5 Tennessee, #6 Florida, #7 Ohio State, #8 Auburn, #9 Georgia, #10 Miami (FL).

In all four lists, it appears that teams from the Southeastern Conference make up the majority of the top ten recruiting classes.  The Big Ten and the Atlantic Coast Conference each has one team on all four lists:  Ohio State and current National Champion Florida State.  Southern California represents the PAC-12, but the Trojans appear in the top ten on only two lists.  The same situation applies to Notre Dame, which is #6 on Scout.com and #10 on 24/7 Sports.  Miami (FL) reached #10 on ESPN's list and regretfully, the BIG XII is not represented in the top ten on any of these lists.  In fact, the school that signed the best class in the BIG XII, Oklahoma, is only ranked as high as #13 on both Scout.com and ESPN.  24/7 Sports has the Sooners at #14 while Rivals.com puts them at #15.

Based on these top ten rankings, it seems like the Southeastern Conference has a substantial recruiting advantage over all the other FBS-level conferences.  One can also see how the SEC compares to the other conferences in recruiting by looking at this table from Scout.com:

Team Recruitment Rankings from Scout.com

Since it is approximately 36 hours before National Signing Day, I decided to post the current FBS-level team recruitment rankings from Scout.com.  At this point in time, Scout.com ranks Alabama's incoming class as #1 in the country.   Where does your team's incoming class rank on this list?  The answer may or may not surprise you.

Note:  There were errors when I attempted to post the rankings from Rivals.com (Yahoo! Sports).  If you still wish to see them, they are available here.
