Week #3 College Football Rankings
My work schedule has been pretty hectic as of the last few days and, as a result, I have been unable until tonight to post anything to my blog. I plan to post this week's schedule of games tomorrow evening and I may write something for Saturday Gameday on Friday evening rather than wait until the next morning. Like I said, my work schedule has put me in a position where I do not have the free time to devote to this blog as I did at this time last year. And I would like to apologize for the lack of updates over the last few days. But, I am here now and I am finally ready to post the rankings and my comments for the third week of the FBS-level college football season.
As many fans are aware, last weekend was a disaster for the Big Ten Conference. The Big Ten's two premier teams of 2014, Michigan State and Ohio State, lost to both Oregon and Virginia Tech respectively. And, as a result, no Big Ten teams are in the top ten of either the AP Top 25 or the USA Today Coaches Poll. Michigan's loss to Notre Dame was a humiliation, and it appears that both Northwestern and Purdue have difficult seasons ahead of them. Indiana had a bye last week but the Hoosiers will visit Bowling Green on Saturday in the program's first road trip of the 2014 season. As for the remaining eight Big Ten teams, they all won their games on Saturday. Unfortunately, a win does not necessarily lead to a higher ranking. Indeed, the Associated Press dropped Nebraska from its rankings despite the Huskers win over McNeese State (The Coaches Poll still has Nebraska ranked at #21). Wisconsin remained at #18 in the AP, but the Badgers did advance two places in the Coaches Poll to land at the #17 spot.
At the end of Week #2, the Big Ten has three teams ranked in the AP Top 25 and four teams in the USA Today Coaches Poll. How did the other conferences' fare in the rankings? Well, if one takes a look at both lists, they seem to disproportionately favor the Southeastern Conference. Five teams from the SEC are in the top ten of both rankings: Alabama #3 AP, #2 Coaches Poll; Auburn #5 AP, #5 Coaches Poll; Georgia #6 AP, #6 Coaches Poll; Texas A&M #7 AP, #8 Coaches Poll; Louisiana State #10 AP, #9 Coaches Poll. As for the rest of the Top Ten, Florida State is still #1 in both polls. Oregon moved to #2 in the AP, but the Ducks are still #4 in the Coaches Poll. Oklahoma's positions (#3 AP, #4 Coaches) were unchanged from last week. Baylor advanced two spots in both rankings to land at #8 in the AP and #7 in the Coaches Poll. Week #2 College Football Game Schedule

Earlier this week the New York Times published an article about how researchers at Vanderbilt University released a report which suggested that college football coaches, namely those at the FBS-level, "who command . . . robust salaries are worth the money because of the value they bring to their universities." Full story here.
CBS Sports' Jerry Palm has unveiled his new College Football Playoff projection system. His weekly playoff projection bracket will appear on the same webpage as his list of postseason bowl projections. As stated in an earlier post, The Howell Report will feature Mr. Palm's bowl projections every week during the second half of the season.
A fire has destroyed the North Carolina home of former Texas Longhorns head coach Mack Brown. At this time, it is not known what caused the fire. Full story here.
UCLA running back Steven Manfro is out for the rest of the season because of a torn ACL. Full story here.
The Florida Gators and the Idaho Vandals announced that they will not reschedule last Saturday's game. Both teams will end up playing 11-game regular seasons. Last week's game had been cancelled because of lightning strikes and an unplayable field. Full story here.
Wisconsin junior quarterback Joel Stave is out indefinitely. It is not known when he will return to practice. Full story here.

Week #2 College Football Rankings
It appears that the Associated Press Top 25, along with the USA Today Coaches Poll, have been released on Tuesday for this week. Florida State retains the number #1 spot in both polls and while the coaches poll overwhelmingly picks the Seminoles as their number #1 overall team, the first-place votes in the AP Poll are somewhat scattered. In the AP Poll, Florida State did receive 46 out of 59 first place votes. The remaining 13 votes were scattered among the following teams: #3 Oregon received five votes; #4 Oklahoma, #6 Georgia, and #9 Texas A&M each received two votes, and #2 Alabama, along with #12 Louisiana State, each earned 1 vote.
Compared with the earlier preseason polls, how did the top ten teams in the AP and Coaches Poll fare this week? Well, in the AP Poll, the top four teams are unchanged: #1 Florida State, #2 Alabama, #3 Oregon, and #4 Oklahoma have not moved in the rankings. Ohio State, which was number #5 last week, fell three spots to #8 despite their victory over Navy. Auburn advanced one place this week to take the #5 spot. Georgia advanced six places to land at #6 for week two, Michigan State took the #7 rank, Texas A&M rose 12 places to land at #9, and Baylor remains at #10.
