As of this morning, my bracket is still intact as the Round of Eight games begin later today. The three teams that I have left in my Final Four (Michigan State, Michigan, and Arizona) have made it to the Regional Finals. I have posted another photo of my bracket, with adjustments, below. Enjoy the rest of the weekend, everybody!
March 30th Update:
Wisconsin defeated Arizona in overtime last night. The Wildcats' loss effectively ruins half my bracket. Later today, Michigan State will play UCONN this afternoon for the East Regional Championship, while Michigan will play Kentucky for the Midwest Regional Championship. Will there be three Big Ten teams in the Final Four? We will find out soon.
Second Update:
Michigan State loses to UCONN, 60-54. The Huskies' victory effectively destroys my bracket. Still, I can take some satisfaction knowing that my bracket lasted until the Round of Eight. In past tournaments, none of my other brackets ever came this close to the Final Four. But even as I get ready to watch Michigan play Kentucky, one question about Connecticut's seeding in the Tournament remains in my mind. How does a #7 seed like Connecticut get such a favorable drawing in their region compared to the other #7 seeds? #7 New Mexico would have had to play in Memphis if they had made it to the Round of 16. #7 Oregon would have played in Anaheim, and #7 Texas would have ended up in Indianapolis. Why did the Huskies play what can be considered a home game in New York's Madison Square Garden in their regional finals? I guess that is a question for another day. Enjoy #2 Michigan vs. #8 Kentucky, everybody.

2014 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship bracket update:
I am happy to mention that my bracket, for all intents and purposes, is still intact as the tournament begins the Round of Sixteen this evening. Three out of the four teams that I selected as my Final Four reached the Regional Semifinals (Sweet Sixteen). The exception was #3 seeded Syracuse which I had winning the South region, but the Orange lost to #11 seeded Dayton in the third round. The three teams in my Final Four that did make it to the Round of Sixteen are #4 seeded Michigan State in the East region, #1 seeded Arizona in the West region, and #2 seeded Michigan from the Midwest region. I have Michigan State and Arizona playing in the National Championship game. For those who are interested in seeing my bracket (with adjustments) it can be found below:
Note: I took this photo with a camera phone earlier this afternoon. Please excuse the quality of the image. Since this photo was taken, Wisconsin defeated Baylor and Dayton beat Stanford.
Update (03/28/14): Florida advanced to the Round of 8 after defeating UCLA, and Arizona outlasted SDSU.
I have filled out brackets for the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament in the past. But, until this year, I had never filled out one that had endured into the Round of Sixteen. We will find out which teams make it to the Final Four at the end of this weekend.
The second part of today's post concerns the American Athletic Conference ("The American"). The 2014 football schedule for this conference is now available on The Howell Report. As most college football fans know, The American largely comprised teams that were football and all sports members of the old Big East Conference which existed from 1979 to 2013. Currently, there are ten members of this conference and they include Cincinnati, Connecticut, Houston, Louisville, Memphis, Rutgers, South Florida, Southern Methodist, Temple, and Central Florida. However, over the next two seasons, The American will undergo significant changes to its membership. On July 1st Louisville will move to the Atlantic Coast Conference while Rutgers will join the Big Ten. That same day, the The American will welcome three new members in all sports: East Carolina, Tulane, and Tulsa. These departures and additions will bring the membership total in The American to eleven for the 2014 season. In 2015, Navy will join as an associate in football only, thus bringing the conference's football membership to twelve. As a result, barring any more departures, The American can establish divisions and sponsor a lucrative championship game in football.
As for the 2014 season, The American features plenty of entertaining non-conference games. Some of these match-ups include Cincinnati vs. Ohio State, Central Florida vs. Penn State, Memphis vs. UCLA, Southern Methodist vs. Baylor (Old Southwest Conference series), Central Florida vs. Missouri, Tulane vs. Georgia Tech, South Florida vs. Maryland, Connecticut vs. Boise State, East Carolina vs. Virginia Tech, Temple vs. Vanderbilt, East Carolina vs. South Carolina, and Cincinnati vs. Miami (FL). Next week the Howell Report will feature the 2014 schedule for the Mountain West Conference. Enjoy the basketball, everybody!!

2014 NCAA Tournament: Brief Bracket Analysis
On Sunday evening, the networks revealed the sixty-eight teams that qualified for the 2014 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. The first round of games begins tomorrow evening in Dayton, Ohio, and the tournament will continue until the National Championship game airs on April 7th from AT&T (Cowboys) Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Tonight's post will be a brief analysis of the four regional divisions that make up the NCAA Tournament bracket.
SOUTH REGION
#1 Seed - Florida Gators, #2 Seed - Kansas Jayhawks
Regional Championship Venue: FEDEX Forum, Memphis, Tennessee.
After going undefeated in regular conference play, and winning the Southeastern Conference tournament, the Florida Gators are the #1 Seed in the South Region. But their path to the regional finals will be a struggle. There are plenty of top-tier teams in this region, including Kansas, Syracuse, Ohio State, Virginia Commonwealth, Pittsburgh, UCLA, and New Mexico. Kansas went to the round of sixteen last year, and I can see them repeating that feat unless a team like New Mexico, the Mountain West Champion, gets the upset. Syracuse may be in a very good position to make a run if they can overcome Ohio State, but that may be a difficult task since the Buckeyes were undefeated in non-conference play this season. Another dangerous team is PAC-12 champion UCLA, who received a #4 seed and will play Conference-USA champion Tulsa in the second round. Can Florida make it all the way to the Final Four? I am not so sure. Going through a conference undefeated is an incredible achievement but the SEC was arguably the weakest of the "power conferences" in basketball this season. Florida's losses to UCONN and Wisconsin, along with narrow escapes against Kansas and Memphis, prove that this team is beatable. Look for a potential upset.
WEST REGION
#1 Seed - Arizona Wildcats, #2 Seed - Wisconsin Badgers
Regional Championship Venue: Honda Center, Anaheim, California.
Despite losing their conference championship game, Arizona deserves their status as a number one seed. The Wildcats were undefeated in non-conference play and their only regular season losses were by single-digit margins (and two of those losses were in overtime). Arizona is in an excellent position to advance all the way to the Final Four, but their main obstacle will be one of two teams from the BIG XII, Oklahoma or Oklahoma State. Oklahoma received a #5 seed, and they represent a conference that sent seven teams to the tournament, more than any other league. San Diego State is in this bracket as well, and despite losing the Mountain West Championship game to New Mexico, the Aztecs still finished the season ranked #13 in the Associated Press Top 25. Wisconsin secured the #2 seed, but their path to the Final Four is a difficult one, since they may have to play either Creighton or Baylor. And both teams were runner-ups in their respective conference championships.
Look for Arizona to do very well in this bracket.
EAST REGION
#1 Seed - Virginia Cavaliers, #2 Seed -Villanova Wildcats
Regional Championship Venue: Madison Square Garden, New York City
It seemed like the #1 seed in this region would come down to either Virginia or Villanova. But, as they say, Villanova's loss was Virginia's gain. Virginia had to defeat Duke in order to put itself in a favorable position to secure its first Final Four appearance since 1984. However, the team most likely to block that road is Big Ten Conference tournament champion Michigan State. The Spartans finished the season ranked #11 in the AP Top 25 and their resume includes wins over then #1 ranked Kentucky in November, and #3 ranked Ohio State in January. Cincinnati is a dangerous #5 seed, but it still has to beat Ivy League champion Harvard. Iowa State, the BIG XII tournament champion, drew a #3 seed while teams like North Carolina and UCONN face the possibility of getting upset in the second round by Providence and Saint Joseph's, respectively. Not sure who will win this region. No clear favorite.
MIDWEST REGION
#1 Seed - Wichita State Shockers, #2 Seed - Michigan Wolverines
Regional Championship Venue: Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Indiana.
More than one commentator had their fair share of critiques for this bracket. Charles Barkley referred to it as a "stacked deck" because Wichita State, the #1 seed, has the most difficult path to the Final Four out of all the top seeds. Indeed, this bracket contains three out of the four teams that made it to the National Semifinals of last year's tournament. My main problem with this bracket is the fact that Duke, though a #3 seed, practically plays in a home venue for its opening round games. Duke plays #14 Mercer in RALEIGH (26.5 miles from campus). That is less distance than any of the #1 seeds have to travel for their opening round games. Let us compare distances right now:
#1 Wichita State - plays in St. Louis, distance from campus: 440 miles.
#1 Virginia - plays in Raleigh, distance from campus: 178 miles.
#1 Florida - plays in Orlando, distance from campus: 111.7 miles.
#1 Arizona - plays in San Diego, distance from campus: 410 miles.
#3 Duke - plays in Raleigh, distance from campus: 26.5 miles.
Not sure why no one has mentioned this problem of fairness and favoritism. Meanwhile, some commentators have asked why Louisville only received a #4 seed, despite winning their conference championship. Two teams from the BIG XII, Kansas State and Texas, are in this bracket, as are two teams from the Atlantic 10: Massachusetts and St. Louis. Can Wichita State become the first team since Indiana back in 1976 to go through the season undefeated? I guess we will find out in a couple of weeks.
Enjoy the tournament, everybody!!

2014 Southeastern Conference Football Schedule
This week's news stories:
According to Mike Slive, the commissioner of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), the league's athletic directors will vote in May on whether the SEC will move to a nine-game conference football schedule for the 2016 season and beyond. Full story here.
Alvin Clemens, a long-term member of the Board of Trustees at Penn State University, resigned his position last week. According to the Associated Press, Clemens, in his resignation, mentions that he regrets his vote to fire Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno. Full story here.
The NCAA is exploring whether to implement an early signing period for college football. Full story here.
A federal judge has sentenced former Fiesta Bowl Chief Executive John Junker to eight months in jail for running an illegal campaign contribution scheme. Full story here.
The following teams are working on future home-at-home series: Texas A&M and UCLA will play a series in the 2016-2017 seasons. Syracuse and Louisiana State have proposed one to be played in 2015 and 2017.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 2014 football schedule for the Southeastern Conference is now available on The Howell Report. As most fans are aware, the SEC consists of fourteen teams which are arranged into two geographic divisions known as East and West. The East division consists of Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt. The West division contains Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Louisiana State (LSU), Mississippi (Ole Miss), Mississippi State, and Texas A&M. For the 2014 and 2015 seasons, SEC teams will continue to play four non-conference games and eight league games. Out of those eight conference games, each team will play all the members of its division along with two inter-divisional opponents. As for the non-conference games, the 2014 schedule features some exciting match-ups, including Alabama vs. West Virginia, Florida vs. Florida State, Georgia vs. Clemson, Missouri vs. Central Florida, Arkansas vs. Texas Tech, Auburn vs. Kansas State, LSU vs. Wisconsin, Ole Miss vs. Boise State, Tennessee vs. Oklahoma, and Texas A&M vs. Southern Methodist. (The last game being an old Southwest Conference rivalry)
As for the rest of the college football world, spring practice has begun all across the country. However, the nation's sports attention, at this time of year, is largely focused on the upcoming NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, otherwise known as MARCH MADNESS. On Sunday at 6:00PM Eastern, CBS will air the NCAA selection show, which will outline the 68-team championship bracket. Even though this blog is dedicated to college football, I plan to post a brief analysis of the bracket before the First Round of games airs on March 18th.

The 2014 football schedule for the PAC-12 Conference is now available on The Howell Report. As most fans know, the PAC-12 consists of twelve teams divided into two divisions named North and South. The North division contains California-Berkeley (CAL), Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Washington, and Washington State. The South division consists of Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Southern California (USC), UCLA, and Utah. Last season, the PAC-12 was very competitive league. Despite Stanford's loss in the Rose Bowl to Michigan State, and the coaching changes at USC, the league's teams finished last season with a 6-3 postseason bowl record. Only the Southeastern Conference had a better postseason record among the power conferences. The 2014 season features some exciting non-conference games, including Michigan State vs. Oregon, Michigan vs. Utah, California vs. Northwestern, Stanford vs. Notre Dame, Washington vs. Illinois, Southern California vs. Boston College, Notre Dame vs. Southern California, UCLA vs. Texas, and Washington State vs. Rutgers.
